I thought he was a jerk after proclaiming himself the "best ever" but he seemed like a decent guy when I saw him play for San Diego.

Professionally, he's conceited as hell. As far as personally, I've never heard anything bad about him off the field.

Stealing 1400+ bases requires an aweful lot of self confidece plus he could hit 20 hr a year and Ricky certainly showed that he had the confidence. Part of his game was to make sure the opposition felt the pressure when he was on the basepaths. He's the only guy I ever saw who would go ahead and steal a base on an obvious pick off throw to first. Ricky was, by far, the best baserunner of all time and he knew it, didn't have a problem making sure you knew it too.
But, was he a jerk. NO. Signed autographs, joked with the fans and kids before games, on the road as well as at home. Did all the tv interviews and seemed to respect the media guys.
What more could you want from a ball player?

Yeah, he was conceited and always talked about himself in the third person( Ricky is the King, Ricky is the Greatest, etc.), but he seems to have mellowed a bit with age. I hope he doesn't try another comeback, so he can finally take his place in the HOF.

Don't know the man, but I have heard this story. Apparently, on the day he joined the Seattle Mariners, Ricky said to John Olerud, who wore a protective helmet when playing first base because he'd had a tumor removed, "Hey, I played with a guy in Toronto who wore a hat like that at first base."
"Yeah, that was me," Olie replied.
Imagine being so hung up on yourself that you don't even remember the guys you won a World Series with!

Ricky Henderson is just fine. He lives in his own world, is all. He's a positive, upbeat guy. Let's face it. Compare him to Bonds or to Cobb. He's all right.
