Because of the prophecy Professor Trelawny foretold to Dumbledore. It said that the person who would defeat Voldemort would be born in the end of July and who's parents would have defeated him three times. And it also said "neither could live while the other survives" so Voldemort tried to kill Harry so Harry would never have the chance to fight Voldemort and therefore Voldemort marked Harry as his equal and made the prophecy come true.
The prophecy also described Neville since Neville's birthday is in the end of July and his parents defeated Voldemort three times but Voldemort chose Harry for whatever reasons and marked him as his equal.
Hope this helps!

He killed them because:

3) Lily died because she tried to save Harry
4) They were fighting him and had won 3 times before
5) Wormtail sold them out
6) Voldemort can never have love/he is pure evil!

It all started the day james forgot to pick up his dog's poo from LV's lawn. so of course, next day the potters' lawn was gone. LV poisoned it. mad at this, instead of apologizing for the accident, James started pestering LV with crank phone calls. Once LV had had enough of that and could stand it no more, he went and spraypainted a large, "Voldemort wuz here" on the side of the potters' house. So, despite Lily's protests, James went and broke several of LV's windows. this made LV doubly angry, since he didn't have many unbroken windows left anyway. It escalated until LV felt he had no choice but to kill them. And we all know what happens after that. All that suffering, for just a little bit of dog poo.

So always, always clean up after your dog!
