There is not a direct opposite -- both Democrats and Republicans want different aspects of socialism.

Democrats want much more socialism than Republicans do, but both advocate for govt regulation of business -- which is part of the core socialist platform.

For example, many Republicans want to put govt restrictions on where products can be purchased and when a company can outsource -- those are socialist restrictions.

Under a pure capitalist model, there are no restrictions placed on the free market economy by the govt.

I have to agree with Scott, just a lighter version of socialists. Look at the size of our government.

Government intervention comes from both sides of the aisle, the Republicans just aren't as bad about it. Sure the they got rid of partial birth abortion, and want to spy on terrorists, but the Democrats mean to put your health care, welfare, social security under the umbrella of government control. At least, the leading Democrats. Less personal responsibility means less freedom. And it applies to business, too.

But the Republicans don't get a pass, with prescription drug plans, and letting insurance and credit companies write their own legislation.
