I have earlier answered this question and I am repeating.....
The main focus of any muti-purpose river valley project is flood control, irrigation, generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, eco-conservation and afforestation, as well as job creation for the socio-economic well being of the people residing in and around areas affected by the projects. However, over the past few decades, power generation has gained because of the demand for electricity/power.

Some interesting facts-
1. The Damodar Valley Corporation, popularly known as DVC, is the first multipurpose river valley project of independent India.
2. The Hirakud Dam in Orissa has the unique distinction of being the longest earth dam of the world.
3. The controversial Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) on the Narmada River is planned to be the largest and most expensive multipurpose river project ever to be initiated in India.
4. The Bhakra-Nangal multipurpose project is among the earliest river valley development schemes undertaken by Independent India.

Sorry, I don't do that sort of thing. But look at Bhakra Nangal and Nagarjunasagar, Narmada (Sardar Sarovar Nigam) and other major multi-purpose river projects. Irrigation, generation of electricity and drinking water to high land areas are the main benefits. There are some problems too (immersion of vast areas, breeding of mosquitoes because of water stagnation, political conflicts among the riparian states, earthquakes etc.).

Projects combining multiple purposes like irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, flood control, sediment control, fish production etc are called multi purpose projects. Bhakra Nangal, Nagarjuna sagar, Sardar Sarovar dam , Damodar valley corporation projects ( 5 dams in all ) are some such multi purpose river valley projects
