"A moral compass can only point you in the right direction. It can't make you go there.

Our (U.S.) culture preaches you shouldn't be ashamed of ANYTHING you do anymore, and, unfortunately the city is based on the principle, there is NO such thing as guilt.

Do whatever you want. We won't tell, so, without a conscience, there is NOTHING to stop you from killing somebody, and, evidently, you don't have to feel guilty about it....."

Hmmm can this REALLY be an explanation here?

You are assuming there is a single culture and a single morality -- that's not a valid assumption.

There are many cultures in the US that are "American" -- try living in South Carolina, versus Florida, versus New York, versus Texas, versus Oregon -- very different cultures and very different standards of behavior.

And most morality is based on religious codes -- and there is not one single dominant religion in the US that everyone MUST follow -- that's the entire point of founding this country -- freedom of choice in how you live your life.

Conscience is the ability to follow the moral code you believe in -- not what someone else wants to force upon you.

LOL! It seems rather the opposite in my opinion. From Gay rights being voted away in almost every state which effects their insurace and medical benefits and taxes, to women's rights being possibly over turned, to Bush's spying bill, to freedom of speech being constantly challenged....the list goes on.

This is all Christian "morality". Not mine.

Well, Hello.....
almost every civilization in the world historically crumbles when it loses its moral compass, gives up its integrity, neglects its honor, takes no responsibility for its reckless conduct, assumes no accountability for its actions, and slothfully allows itself to mire in the muck of casualness, immorality, lack of character, and ethical misbehavior.
Like the great Greek and Roman empires before us, the U.S.A. is about to see its culture collapse from the sheer weight of its bloated moral, physical and spiritual obesity.
While we might not be regurgitating to compliment our hosts; wearing togas to orgies; or worshiping a great Caesar, we are nonetheless piggishly indulging in waste, fraud and pettiness; relaxing our mores and standards to all-time lows; and worshiping money and materialism above all else. Unless we undergo a moral awakening, we are doomed to repeat the history that left Greece and Rome in ruins. -RKO- 08/12/-07

"American culture", is really just the sum of all the other cultures America has to endure by the folks who come here and bring theirs with them.

It has turned into a free for all. Is it any wonder our civil rights are being challenged.
