as far as i know jewish graves face jerusalem and muslim graves face mecca.
christian graves face the east just like old churches used to face east, the sun... "representing" the ressurection.
i'm not sure about graves in other religions.

It is because when the Sun would go down, the people wouldn't know if it would come back; when it did, it meant to them a sign of rebirth, like the world was created all over again.

It's so that the bodies can sit up directly and behold the return of jebus. Too bad they'll all be filled with cotton balls and formaldehyde. Jebus doesn't like that smell any more than biology students do.

I think it is so they can see the coming of Jesus on judgment day, because he is supposed to rise from the east and blow gabriels trumpet or some such.
