They need to be paid much more than they are getting. AND they need access to as much health care as is required to rehabilitate them after they are off the front line.

I agree!
However, military service helped me to earn a degree. I didnt join to get rich and I knew the pay before going is as did everyone else.
In addition, I can go to any VA hospital and receive virtually free care if I want it.
Yes, Id like to see soldiers make more but there are many lifelong benefits.
Besides, I looked at it as an honor to serve a country that had been so good to me and my family.

""The Bush administration today threatened to a veto a House defense spending bill over a 3.5 percent pay raise for U.S. soldiers and a $40/month increase in benefits for military widows, among other provisions. The legislation passed the House today 397-27."
"Bush budget officials said the administration “strongly opposes” both the 3.5 percent raise for 2008 and the follow-on increases, calling extra pay increases “unnecessary.”
House and Senate approved raises.
Let's see if he does veto them.

Hey, here is an idea, lets all pool our money together, and split it evenly.
Sorry, but you sound like a socialist. We have a voluntary military, and people join for various reasons, mostly for patriotic duty, not for the paycheck. I see you ignored the cost of living expenses in your sarcastic disclaimer.
If you want to spend a quarter million dollars on law school and give away your earnings, go ahead and do so, don't tell others to do it, or you will be called a hypocrite.

how do republicans "shoot" down a bill before it reaches the presidents desk?

A lawyer average $62K per year -- and graduates from lawschool with between $100K and $150K in student loans.
So, overall after taxes (40%) and after paying that off law school loans, the starting lawyer makes very little.
But I agree that soldiers and sailors should be paid a LOT more than what they currently get -- and not just in cash, but benefits and long-term assistance.
It's just not correct to compare that against other professions that are fundamentally different in so many ways.

Well, my sister had her baby on base with her husband who was in the military. The cost of everything was 25 bucks IE for a c section. I don't know about you but that is one saving that I would not mind having as a citizen. Just to have a c section to have my wife's tubs reveres was 2500. That did not include the follow up check ups, and cost of re cut and removable of the left tub because it went bad on us. Cost of living is hell cheap vs being a citizen.
BTW go look up the cost of a c section. 3k to 10k easy and my sister paid out of pocket 25 bucks.

When I served, I served proudly at 397. a month. They are making considerably more than this today. When people serve, they are doing it to be part of something bigger than themselves. They are doing it out of love of country. They are serving for a host of other reasons, none of which has ever been for money. My family is loaded with veterans and active duty military.

I support the troops and do believe they are not getting paid enough. What they should get paid? I don't know. I know people don't join the military for big paychecks. They do it because they want to serve this country of ours. I think if we raise the pay to much we will have people joining for all the wrong reasons.

You know...... there was a time in history,
That people pursued justice and sought for a cause
...not because of a monetary price, but because it was an honor to 'serve' and the right thing to do.
Service before Self.....remember that.
Soldiers, firemen, policemen, medics, teachers etc understand this, And they still serve willingly.
Much to be admired.
