Every living thing needs sleep. The heart slows down, the breathing is more slow and regular and the muscles become more relaxed. Sleep means different things to different forms of animal life. The Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary defines sleep in animals (humans, dogs, fish, all animals) as: A period of rest during which volition and consciousness are in partial or complete abeyance and the bodily functions are partially suspended; a behavioral state marked by characteristic immobile posture and diminished but readily reversible sensitivity to external stimuli. Each different animal chooses to perform sleep in different ways. Some lay down and close their eyes, and some just hover with their eyes open, but it doesn't mean that they don't sleep. Sleep is not about closing the eyes. It's about rejuvenation.

Fish don't have eyelids, so they can't close their eyes, but they also don't sleep because they have to continuously fight against the current. Fish rest by slowing down their hearts and being less active. They do, however, occasionally flick their fins to balance themselves and stay in place.

its like they go into a trance. I turn off the light and my Betta goes to his sleeping spot every night. When I come back or wake in the morning he will let out a yawn and wake up. I think they sleep by like I said going into a trance.
