Tough call, that depends on where you live I guess, but trying to be global:
In the west, Alexander the Great for daring to push Hellenistic culture by all means, for his love of knowledge and exploration, and for basically preparing the field for Western culture to thrive.
In the east, Genghis Khan, for unifying a vast territory and promoting respect for all faiths, free trade and the spread knowledge. He also gave us modern nations as a result of their widespread army settling in different places and starting their own dynasties.

If I were to chose two historical figures, I would have to say one would be Abraham Lincoln. A self taught man who became President during a trying time in American History. His primary goal was to keep this nation intact no matter what the cost. Even after the end of the Civil War, his view points of unification did not change.
Second character would have to be Winston Churchill. A great political mind, who as Lincoln, did everything he could to keep his nation intact. His speech's were a great inspiration to his people during a time of despair.

Bobby Kennedy. If the stories are true (I was born just before he was shot), he was willing to do the right thing and able to get it done. The U.S. would probably be a very different place if he had lived.
The Luddite and Red Clydeside movements. Industrialization has led to the down-skilling and de-valuing of production and workers. Our lives are now dedicated to the pursuit of accumulating disposable goods. They didn't win, but at least they tried.

Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, FDR, John F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King. They have affected my country, the US, the most by sticking to their beliefs in growing the US to be the best nation ever even though the world was against them. And you know what, they turned out making America a great place for people to live in. I also like Napoleon Bonaparte because he's, you know, Napoleon.

1. Elizabeth I, Queen of England 1558-1603. I am fascinated by her life and wonder what it must have been like for her to be repeatedly accepted and rejected by her father, to have her mother beheaded (by her father), to be imprisoned by her sister, and to become queen at a very young age in a male-dominated society. She pulled her country together after the religious bloodshed instigated by her sister Mary during her own short reign. She ruled with a strong will.
2. Charles Darwin. His observations during his voyage on the HMS Beagle have changed the way many people understand not only our own origins, but the origins of all life on Earth. I have great admiration for his bravery for proposing such ideas during a time when religion was a way of life, a given, and undisputed. Although he was a Christian and not disputing God's existence, he was disputing the commonly held notions of how humans came to be. That must have taken great courage and a deep commitment to scientific impartiality.
