How can I tell if my 7 month old son has diarrhea? He usually poops 3 times a day, spread out across the day. For about 3 days he has been going 3-5 times per day. He has gone 3 times already this morning (it is almost noon). It is looser, but only once have I seen what I would call watery. He just got over some congestion.... should I call the doctor?

He does not have a fever, is eating fine, and does not seem upset.

Your child's bowel movements will change a lot over the first year. As long as he doesn't have a fever and is eating and drinking at a normal rate then you don't need to worry.

Nahhh... Only if he gives you several more that are watery. Most of the time, diarrhea is watery and you're getting a diaper or more every hour.

If he's happy and playing and acting fine, don't worry! Just keep offering him stuff to drink, and if he's interested in eating, load him up on the carbs - rice cereal, bananas, applesauce, mashed potatoes, Cheerios - anything he's already eating that's in that vein. If he stops drinking, or acts sick, or you don't get ANY wet diapers over the next eight hours, THEN call the doctor. Otherwise, it could be the remainder of what caused that congestion getting outta his system. BTW - if he drinks juice, don't let him, that could make diarrhea worse! (And don't give Pepto or Immodium - those have been known to give little kids bad tummy cramps or make the runs worse.)

I just went through the same thing with my 10 month old. She started doing the same thing and a day later I was sick throwing up with diarrhea. It turned out to be a really bad stomach flu that was going around town. Everyone I knew got the same thing. Thankfully my 10 month old only got diarrhea and she was not throwing up like I was. I called her doctor when it started and they told me to get Isomil DF Soy Formula and pedialight. They just want you to keep them hydrated Chances are you have the same stomach flu. The only thing you can do is wash your hands a lot. When I started throwing with diarrhea up my doctor told me to take Imodium a-d and they called in some Phenergan for the nausea. Good luck!
