No one will be within range of a VHF on land. Everyone else uses a CB. Citizen's band is on a different frequency than a VHF.

I suppose you bought a VHF marine radio? If so, buy yourselves a suitable antenna which is easy to mount on a bracket on your boat as high as possible. Buy a quarter wave antenna which is cheep and does not need to be any longer then +/- 50cm. Measure the distance between radio & antenna connector, and add 1 meter for eventual mistakes. Go to the shop where you bought the radio and/or antenna, and ask the guy over there to prepare the lenght of coax cable you need with fitting connectors for both radio & antenna (should be the same 'male' connectors). The coax cable does not need to be very thick (RG58), but needs to be of a good 50ohms quality.
With no power on the radio, connect radio & antenna, and make sure those connectors in open air within reach of water are well insulated.
Portable radio's are OK, but just as a back up.. within reach of the shore and with fully loaded batteries..
Safe sailing and good communications.

Well mate, I think it's illegal to tarnsmit on a marine band radio if you're not on a flaoting 18 wheeler.. I'm not sure but I think you can listen but they will track you down and slap you arround if you transmit..
Now I may be wrong here but I don't think so..You might want to check with the Coast Gaurd on this before firing up that unit..

If it's a VHF than it's illegal marine only.If a CB than any short SS whip will work. If you must use the VHF than get a sail mast mount with a load.SS antenna. There are a lot of hand held with antenna an you can put in your pocket. With cigarette chargers>

SELL IT ON CRAIGSLIST FOR WHAT YOU PAID FOR IT OR RETURN IT TO THE STORE YOU BOUGHT IT AT. THEN GO BUY YOURSELF A GOOD HANDHELD VHF RADIO, THE ANTENNA IS BUILT IN. YOU WON'T NEED AN ANTENNA WITH A GOOD HANDHELD RADIO, AND IT WILL GIVE YOU 25 MILES OF TALKING AND LISTENING TOO. GOOD LUCK. P.S. YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO USE A VHF ON LAND, DON'T GET CAUGHT, HEAVY FINE.
