If you are only at AA at 16, your chances of making it to the NHL are pretty slim. Most players that eventually make it to the NHL are starting their first year of Junior Hockey at 16 be it at either Tier 1 Junior A (Major Junior) or Tier 2 Junior A (this is the option for those wishing to play NCAA)

If you are playing AA, because if financial issues, then maybe, but you have to be tearing it up. I have seen some kids that had the skill, but not the money to play in a better league. If you are playing AA, because you coudn't make AAA, or Junior A or B, then I don't think you will make it, but things change, so try hard. Don't get caught up in trying to make the NHL, because 99.9% of the kids who play won't make it.

even playing AAA @ 16 your NHL chances are slim unless your very good.

The hockey levels are usually sumthing like:
houseleague (anyone can play)
Select (player's usually play houseleague as well)
A
AA
AAA
Junior A or Jr B or Jr C (for example the OHL is Jr A)
Then pro hockey either AHL or if your good enough NHL
This is in canada and similar in the US but not sure about Europe

This is the basic set-up for all minor hockey in Canada.

Tyke - 5,6 (all house) [no split]
Novice - 7,8 (all house) [no split]
Atom - 9,10 (AA, A, B, C, D) [no split]
Pee Wee - 11,12 (AA, A, B, C, D) [no split]
Bantam - 13,14 (AAA, AA, A, B, C, D) [minor 13, major 14]
Midget - 15,16,17 (AAA, AA, A, B, C, D) [minor 15, major 16,17]
Junior - 18,19,20 (A, B, C) [no split]

The splits are only done at the AAA & AA levels.
