I got a dirt bike, I would like to get it alittle faster in the long run. I need a new sprocket soon, it's getting thin and teeth are bending. I got a 51tooth now. is I get a 47tooth. Will I get it alot faster?.. I know I will loose some torque, in low end, but I have so much, so I can spare some.

Yes, a 4 tooth smaller rear sprocket will make a noticeable difference in top speed, not outrageous, but noticeable.

I would say stay with the 51, what is your concern with top speed on a dirt bike any way?
MX is more about how fast you can go in tight spaces and over jumps and "whoops" ,than it is about flat out on a straight away.

dude u got a 51tooth sprocket on the bike? ur luckey then beacuse most bikes come from the factory 47teeth

now what u must understand about the teeth. more teeth means u get more torque to the back tire, and faster acceleration
while the small sprocket get less torque to the back tire, less acceleration out of turns, BUT faster over all speed.

if ur ridening on a track with more turns and short straight aways then stay with the big sprocket, but if u spend more time on the straight aways and their isn't too many turns then stay with the small sprocket.

put it this way if u can come out of a turn and old full speed for over 10 second before letting off the throttle then i would go to a smaller sprocket

I have to agree with 'Firestormer' In theory, a bigger front sprocket and smaller rear sprocket will give you better top speed + vice versa. Having said that though, putting a 17T front sprocket and a 32T rear sprocket on a 125cc bike wont get you much more topspeed...if anything it will lower it. This is because the gearing isn't optimum, as the engine isn't powerful enough to pull the higher gearing and so in turn will hinder both your acceleration and topspeed. It's all a case of reading some owners reviews on your bike and just mixing and matching the sprockets to see what gearing you like/prefer. Good luck :D --Mikey B--

not a lot faster but a little, depending on how many teeth on your trans sprocket. I'm running 22 on the trans with a 46 on the rear it runs "about' 13 mph faster at the same rpm than a 51 in 5th.(130 as opposed to 117 mph) to make a bigger difference get a trans sprocket with 2 or 3 more teeth (if you have room) in addition to the rear with less. keep in mind this will make all your gears higher so you may have to slip your clutch or rear tire more to get off the line in 1st. on a dirt bike you probably wont notice it.

Yes, you will see a difference in top end, not radical, but some. Yes you will lose low end torque too. Not a good trade off in a dirt bike, where torque is more important. I used to run a 175cc bike against 250 cc bikes. They took me in the flats but I overtook them in the corners, hill climbs and deep sand. The best way to get more top end speed, is to move up to a bigger bike.
Have fun with what you have till you can afford to move up.

NO--less speed and more power or torque. The bike has a certain power and is matched by engineering the best rations to use for driving. .. What ever you decide to do. You must buy a new engine gear to match the rear sproket...Or the chain will not stay on board.. If you decide to get more speed on the top end--you will put a lot of wear slipping the clutch to get rolling from a stop... Take your pick gears or clutch???

go for 4 teeth

It will help a little, but it's not going to solve your need for speed drasticly.
