1. MUST have an ISP to access the internet.
2. CAN become your own ISP.
3. They USUALLY 'rent out' connection space through THEIR system.
You would require a registered 'domain' and a dedicated connection with the necessary hardware (telephone, sattelite, etc.)
For further information, obtain a book or three on the subject. MANY are available, some even through libraries. (Being an ISP can be 'a pain in the ***', as you have to be knowledgeable in MANY fields and/or sub-fields if you are going to DIY.)

Hi, if u have alot and lots of cash there is no doubt u can become one. When I was like 10 or 11 I used to try to access it that way anyway I am 17 now but **** thats no the point. An ISP connects u to the world wide web through a satellite and it manages ur connection for u and allows u to access differrent networks like Yahoo and stuff.
It can be done but u r going to have to buy your own dish for sending and receiving data, and buy a license that allows it and alot of other stuff. Which is really expensive and keeping up with all the costs of running it will make u go bankrupt even if u r a billionaire. Its way better to buy of other ISP's who handle everything for u.
Anyway hope I helped, but if you want to become an ISP then can u give me a connection on a discounted rate. LOL!
Good Luck!

Several years ago I heard that an ISP was able to work as it did mainly because it purchased or rented dedicated access from the telephone network. I don't know if it was true, but you might want to contact your phone company and ask.
I doubt that a cable company would be interested in making similar offers, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to contact them.

someone I know gets internet without an ISP but that is only because she lives on the street right behind a big hotel that has a wireless network. I'm not sure that it is exactly legal, but she can't stop getting their signal. So, oh well...

Yes it can be done. You would need to lease a line from the major telcos. It would be horribly expensive. AT&T will lease you a line. You don't want a T1, it's too slow. You want faster than that. Tell them you need a 10Mbps line. They will run one out to your house. Then you will need to purchase a public IP address. Then you are off and running.

Sorry, no chance. It's the ISP provider that actually logs you into the internet and hence, you cannot bypass it.

Go to your cell phone carrier and ask them for a Wireless card that works anywhere in the US. Cost $50, but you have to pay monthly also.
