Dlin333: Then at what base part of our existence do our emotions really work. To me it seems they are fundamentally linked to the self. Empathy and so forth perhaps operate on a higher level.

Annie Oakley: There's a big difference between being a perfectly good person, and being enlightened. I doubt 'God' would give us enlightenment on a plate. Surely enlightenment is more about self-discovery, that long and lonely road.

Animals are pure emotion, very little thought.
People like to think that animals are not emotional. That is just a part of their denial of their own animal nature.
Enlightenment is knowing that part of us and rising above it.
The word enlightenment is used by many people without any understanding of what it really means. It is not written in stone! As we evolve, and learn, the meaning does too.
In the future, people will rise above where we are now.

Define enlightenment.........?
For me god or any spirit plays no part in anything we humans gain. Myth after myth and false belief there simply is no higher order as once told. God and likewise is fiction to aid acceptence and to control.
However, the next link in evolution? a higher understanding of us as a race? our bio-link to everything on the planet?
The civilization becoming at one?
who really knows and seriously something for now we cannot say but emotions.........well that is mind manufactured from the input of our environment - systematically created ?

Although there are only some biological barriers to rich enlightenment (theoretically). And also it depends much on what one defines as enlightenment...! Emotions should be used only as reference points to understand conditions within emotion. Emotions are not really good yard sticks of Ethical questions or mostly any other question. We have many silly and awful mistakes under humanity's belt do to listening to emotion before reason!!! Mass hysteria is an emotion driven issue!
Emotions are not bad... They are biological tools evolved to our complexity level as animals, yet not really all functional within our civilization level...! Our Biological evolution has been way outran by our development as a technical society... And that is reason for so much insanity we see in our ways of functioning! Our emotions are not fit to this level... they are obsolete tools as far as functioning in modern society in some aspects. Clearing you mind of emotions make you understand most things better, even emotions themselves...!

Yes, we can achieve enlightenment. It happens when God chooses to touch our hearts, not when we decide. It's called: being born again.
Our emotions are a result of our thoughts.
Since we are the only ones who control our thoughts, we are also responsible for what we are feeling. Emotions can not steal anything from us that we don't want stolen.

Sometimes we can be led from the truth because emotionally we don't want believe it.
Enlightenment is having your eyes open to your inner self, the ability to explore your emotions and see beneath them few people manage to do this myself included

your troubles enlighten, no trouble no enlightenment, how one handles the trouble, and what one learns from it, the spirit comes in to it when the trouble is at its most diar, when people feel at a total loss, they pray, they are pulled out of the trouble but they forget that they prayed for it when all is well again. even so they do learn, and the more trouble the more learning, and the more empathy for outhers who have the same trouble.

i think no, your emotions are an integral part of you, and part of being human, and enlightenment is not about pushing down any part of yourself, but about becoming a balanced, well -woven together person . of course we cant be ruled by emotions, just as we cant be ruled by any one thing, we learn when to use what, when to use moderation and when to let it run free
ps: in response to your additional details, yes, our emotions are linked to ourselves, and that is why i feel they do not prevent us from truth, and we would use them if enlightened, wasnt sure i stated my thought clearly, i dont think we can nor should try to separate ourselves from our emotions, but analyze why we are having a certain one,
for instance, we may feel angry or upset, and then realize the reason we feel this way is due to our expectations not being met, then we can ponder on that, are our expectations realistic for the situation? do we have a right to place such an expectation on the person or situation or even ourselves? resolving these type questions helps us to know ourselves and manage our emotions and mental state better.
i feel that almost any emotion can be used in a positive sense, such as one should have justifiable anger , hate evil, etc there are even times when greed can serve a useful purpose, temporarily.
