Probably lack of water.

Curling can be attributed to a cell or multiple cells dieing on one side white the others continue to divide and elongate. Death could be from a insect puncture, brief drought, some physical injury. Perhaps the "string" did not grow as quickly as the rest of the pod.....for whatever reason. This can also be genetic.....or at least a propensity for this to occur.

Sure makes it hard to put them into jars for canning!
