you become aware by making purchase mistakes. You look for the flaws in a product. You compare one product to another, compare price from one product to the next (like compare prices of all toasters), determine what functions each has and which function(s) you want it to have. Some people will rarely use a toaster so one that is $12 might do nicely. Others use a toaster often for their "family" and on a daily basis so they will need a well known brand and maybe more slots in the toaster and one they know will work time after time and for many years (and they will also check the warranty). You'd also check that the plug has been UL approved. Some people even look for a specific color to match the color scheme of their kitchen. Me? Well I'd be concerned about the brand and price. (if I were looking for a tv I'd also be looking for less weight and buying according to the new law that will come in in 2009). So if the price at one place doesn't match my pocketbook I'd just go somewhere else that had the same product. Also don't let some fast talking salesman try to sell you something you don't want or like. And a product on sale isn't always the best of the bunch (as it may be a store model or one somebody brought back because it didn't function well for them)..

One great resource is: "Consumer Reports" (CR) magazine. They literally report on the technical and "behind the scences" information about every kind of product out there. They tell you which ones are good, which ones suck, everything.
Anothor source is to hook up with Ralph Nader's people. They go a step beyond CR, but keep their focus on being consumer advocates to help you from being ripped off.

there is a saying cavet emptor means let the buyer be aware of. before resorting to purchase u have to think about the product. modern definition of product includes service also. product is a bundle of utilities. hence before purchasing the consumer has to think about the product its features, price quality , specification, availablity os spares, service after sales,warranty competitiors and their products thereby the consumer has an opportunity to analyse the product which he wants to select. all these are the things to be kept in mind by the consumer before resorting for purchase. for further information refer philips kotler marketing management or any text book on marketing. sherleker marketing management or stantons marketing management or any book on consumer behaviour. all the best.
