Laughing is a spontaneous reaction for me. I couldn't "think" first if I wanted to. (Why would I need to think?) Of course, I wouldn't laugh in Court, (I would on the inside), or at someone's misfortune. I don't just laugh at "jokes." There's so much comedy in life. Laughing can prevent a heated debate from getting hostile, & bring people out of their gloom when they're alerted--by a laugh--to the comic. It's contagious. People need to laugh more, instead of so often getting esoteric, & quarrelsome. I just laughed at an answer & can't remember if it was LORD V, but I think it was. A sincere sense of humour can get us through the worst of times.

I guess I would have to say laugh first. Reason is that if what I am laughing at, is something that could get me into trouble, then I deserve that trouble. I mean, I could find humor in a heart attack. I make humor out of anything. That's been the kind of way I was raised. Not by my parents, but, my brothers. We did our best to out do each other in that field. As soon as the family sort of split up, I just never lost it. There have been times (especially in church) that I found humor not too widely accepted. Let me give an example: Our pastor got yet another speeding ticket. Everyone was giving little pokes in his rib for it and when the people looked at me, waiting for my comment, I asked if he was working toward a prison ministry. My wife almost peed her pants, and there were a few that rolled in their seats, but, afterward I had people walking up to me saying I should go and apologize. IT WAS A JOKE PEOPLE! Needless to say I didn't last long in that church. Oh well!

I think that if you feel like laughing, then you should laugh. If it turns out to be insulting, you should just let the person know that you didn't mean for it to be offensive. Apologize if you want to. You only saw the good and funny side of things.
Sometimes people think too much and miss the point of a joke, or a punchline. Sometimes people get too uptight over spoofs & bloopers. We read too much into things and forget about simple pleasures, like sharing a laugh. Like I said, if it turns out to be offensive, you can always apologize later. Just explain where you're coming from; most people just shrug it off anyway.
There's also no point in regretting innocent laughter, because at that moment, you were doing what you wanted and laughing what you thought was funny. Why deprive yourself of laughter, when people say it's the best medicine?

Nope... It depends on what bring the comic moment about! Some jokes require some thinking to be funny. Other jokes are only funny when you did not give it any "thinking."
Technically things are only funny because you actually took a small fraction of time to connect peaces of information within your memory that made it funny!!!
Politically it is wise not to laugh without understanding the consequences of finding something funny. In these conditions it is better to have a somewhat awkwardly late laugh than to laugh when it was not supposed to be funny for someone!!! You can always say you had a momentary lapse and only got it with a delay... However, being political like that is damaging to your overall quality of life, unless your quality of life depends on being political...

Didn't you have to think first to find that which made you laugh funny?
If you are concerned what others will think of you, then holding your tounge and discerning a proper response would always be in your best interest. However, the side effect may be someone who is a conformist to the point of boredom. If your laughter would result in the detriment of another's self being and they are undeserving, then you should be sure to hold your tounge or your guilt will serve to eat you alive.
There is always a time a place to let loose and be yourself and not worry about censorship, and I should hope these times and these places out weigh those times in your life when you cannot. If this is not the case one should reevaluate their circumstances of living for they are not truly alive, merely existing for the sake of pleasing others.

That is not fair.
You asked this in the Philosophy section.
The audience is stacked against me.
It belongs in Polls and Surveys.
In this section all the thinkers will wonder what you mean and everyone else will just laugh.
Besides you know I have to say laugh.
If I say think about it then I am just contradicting myself so all I can say is laugh.
Oh the humanity of it, hoisted on my own pitard.
