My compaq failed, I have bought a new Compaq. The old drive has been tested and found to be ok. The new machine is fitted with Vista. Can I slave the XP drive onto the Vista drive

Yes you can,
But, it does not mean that you can boot into XP as well.

Being a secondary drive, the boot sector on it will be ignored, so Vista will be your Operating system and this will be an extra drive on your computer.

You can connect it as a Slave it will come up as E or F drive and will allow you to switch from your C drive with Vista to your E or F drive with XP They will be independent of one and other.

Yes its possible, change the jumper settings on the hard drive to select slave. It will save you some space if you format the drive first!

yes set xp one as slave plug in power cord and ide ribbon should have two hard drives
