Yes. That's ridiculous! You should have to work for nice things.
I'm definitely biased, though. I got a class ring and senior photos, but no expensive prom or vacation.

Our kids graduated not that long ago, and they didn't do anything like that, although one spent more than we liked on photos. However, she made her own prom dress (just like Carrie!), and the kids didn't get a limo or rent a beach house, just attended a private party at someone's house where they all cooked together, then shared what they'd made.
FWIW, about half this social group was rich kids, I mean rich, like full-time or live-in help, an elevator in the house. That kind of rich, and even they didn't go to such ridiculous extremes.
I mean, geez, don't we all hope that our freakin' high school graduation is not the high point of our lives?

I live in England. For my prom I spent about £30 on a dress, that's about $60 I think. I didn't have a limo, I drove me and my three friends there. I didn't buy photos (I took my own) and didn't have an after prom party. My whole year almost were going to university, they didn't have the money to buy all that stuff. American graduations sound like overkill.

Same age but I doubt many that haven't seen me since Grad would know me. Still got hair, although mostly silver, but did pick up some poundage. Also have a beard( about 70%silver) and think I have actually shrunk in height. ( not that I was tall to begin with) Amazingly, most folks seem to recognize me a whole lot quicker than I recognize them. I have run into folks that hadn't seen me in 20 years and still seem to know me. Guess I am not good at faces and am always at a disadvantage remembering who they are. I work where there are about 850 employees and I know some I went to school with. Apparently many more since some are usually addressing me and I have no clue who they are, even when they start reminiscing about "how far back we go" Guess I just got ate up by the dmb azz.

Not only extravagant but also utterly redundant as well as irrelevant. In no other country kids GRADUATE from a high school, which actually imparts secondary education and not of a graduation level.Could this be one of the reasons of falling educational standards in USA?I find most Americans short on any in depth knowledge of anything except what is related to their source of livelihood.Glorification of some thing as basic as a high school education is nothing but accepted lower national goals, which doesn't behoove a so called Super power.

I've been to western Europe, and I'm going again next year, in grade 12. Extravagant? Yes. An amazingly fun trip? ALso yes. It's a matter of choice.
