I was recently getting jealous of the female orgasm, being a virgin, taking the medias word for how intense it is. It started to get me down so I got in touch with some friends in the medical profession to get some expert information.
When I asked them if the female orgasm was much more powerful than the male orgasm, and if the media protrayals of it were accurate, they lunged at me! Accusing me of falling for nonsense and exaggerations in pornography and the media.
Apparently the female orgasm in those women who can attain it, in the majority of cases, is more or less equal in strength to the males, but lasts longer and takes longer to achieve.
They said that the media representation of the female orgasm puts stress not only on men who might feel inferior, but the majority of women who cannot obtain these over the top mega orgasms they feel they are supposed to - and many can't have them at all :(
Has anyone else found that the media exaggerates this concept a lot?

Considering we are surrounded by this myth, as well as many others, the number of really great answers here is great.
Feminism combined with male-targetted porn turned female orgasms into this huge fantastical deal. The reality seems to be that there are differences between orgasms, but in terms of intensity, both seem to be too similar to call.
The number of women that can have 20 full body orgasms one after another is so small it's probably not worth thinking about - for all intensive purposes, it doesn't happen.
The same thing is happening to men now - all these stories of crazy new toys that can give men full body multiple orgasms - but is there any proof? No. Do 99% of men experience them? No.

So what if you're a virgin, you can give yourself an orgasm. I can give myself an orgasm in 5 minutes and have had quickies lasting about that long and have had an orgasm, so I don't think it's true about an orgasm taking forever to achieve. (Wait, are you a guy?)
As for the media, I think sometimes the media over plays the importance of an orgasm. One can be sexually satisfied without an orgasm. I do believe that it's true that many women cannot orgasm or women that take a long time to orgasm, but I suspect that has more to do with cultural and individual attitudes about sex and female sexuality than biology. There have been studies that show that most women don't even know they are turned on when they are. Women have been sexually repressed in our culture for many years! Just think of the myth of the 'sexual peak' that women are supposed to have in their 30s. In reality, it has more to do with an understanding that cultural attitudes and supression of female sexuality is just plain stupid.
I wouldn't know how the female orgasm is in comprassion to men, but it is certainly true that women can experience multiple orgasm during intercourse.

Yes - and did you know only around 30% of women orgasm from penetrative sex alone?
I'm a strong believer that a lot of women miss-out because so few of them or their partners really know about their bodies, how to get the most out of sex, because they don't think to question what they see in society through media and from other peoples experience.
In the media women scream, sweatingly swinging from the curtains from the mere touch of a man, forget the fact women's orgasm is made to seem so much more impressive than a mans also look at how it is shown in general, very few women orgasm during sex because the right effort and stimulation is not put into it, if we do not react like women in the media we are seen as 'difficult' to please - some men would rather put the blame on the women then the men...I know this well, this was in-directly responsible for sexual abuse from my partner in my teens and still plauges me now as I'm seen as 'difficult to please' and so few men seem willing to experiment in thinking and approaching sex in different ways.
Sex is viewed very strangely within the media, it's not just female orgasm that is overplayed but male orgasm is overplayed too in that it is seen as the goal of everything, very rarely do you hear about male multiple orgasm or sex without orgasm - long, pleasurable sex seems to be a no-go area, the end goal is always screaming orgasm for both men and women, so both miss out on the joys of real sexual pleasure - wham, bam, thank you maam!

I don't know if it is exaggerated. I have seen porn videos where girls are screaming and fainting and I can be quiet during an orgasm if I have to. I don't pass out and I haven't had any multiples. But I do have what seems to me to be very intense orgasms. They affect my whole body and last for about 15 seconds or so...I used a watch to see. I have a lot of trouble standing up and walking if I try to do it *right* after an orgasm ends. I CAN do it but Im very weak & wobbly.

Look honey don't listen to the media - get in touch with your body - get to know your body and what turns you on especially where you like to be touched. And forget about the media - when you get to have sex bark orders - tell the guy what you want because he can't read your mind. A woman is much more difficult to read than a man. making a guy have an orgasm is easy very easy. a guy's job is tougher. You have to help him out to make you climax.

It's one of those things that no one's ever going to know. I mean, a woman can never know what a male orgasm feels like and vise versa.
I rather suspect they're probably similar.
Also, I think that the media pretty much exaggerates everything, and if porn were like reality, people probably wouldn't watch it so much.

Yes, they do exaggerate. From what I can tell, if mine are any more intense than my husband's, it's not by much.
