LOL .... you haven`t figured that one out yet ? It`s usually the younger "cool" males that do this , Eunice .
Being immature , self-centered little snots , they`re under the delusion this makes them look tough , mysterious , avante-gard and whatever else these uneducated little pea-brains feel it does for them .
They`re so self-centerd , they honestly don`t realize everyone is holding back , at least till they leave . Then they break out in a round of laughter .

There are various reasons. Some people do it because they think it looks cool. Some people do it because they are hiding something (a black eye or blood shot eyes for example). Some people have health issues that cause them to have problems with strong light. And some people who wear them are blind.
There is really no one reason that applies to all.

I've only really noticed this in famous people on tv interviews. I think it's rude. They , famous or not may think it's cool but when someoe covers their eyes to me it's like covering their identity. I suspect they are hiding something like blood shot eyes or a black eye. May not be true so if not they are just being down right rude!!

They are hiding the 'whites' of their eyes which are red from doing drugs. Or they're trying to score a shot at some deep cleavage or and upskirt shot without anyone noticing where they are looking.
