People who are known carriers of the disease often undergo genetic counseling before they have a child. A test to see if an unborn child has the disease takes either a blood sample from the unborn or a sample of amniotic fluid. Since taking a blood sample from a fetus has risks, the latter test is usually used.

Genetic counselors are present at high risk or specialty prenatal clinics that offer prenatal diagnosis, pediatric care centers, and adult genetic centers.

Various approaches are being sought for preventing sickling episodes as well as for the complications of sickle-cell disease. Other ways to modify Hb switching are being investigated, including the use of phytochemicals such as Nicosan.

Gene therapy is under investigation

I'm assuming you live in the U.S or Canada, so i can only give you general websites for genetic councelling

http://www.nsgc.org/ <--- national
http://www.cagc-accg.ca/section/view/ <--- canadian
http://www.abgc.net/english/view.asp?x=1 <--- american

some websites listing clinical trials for SC:
http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct/gui/action/FindCondition?ui=D000755&recruiting=true
http://www.scinfo.org/

In the end, since both you and your fiancee are both carriers, you should note that there is a 1 in 4 chance that you will have a child born with SC and as of yet any available pre-birth treatments are highly experimental.

I wish both you and your fiancee the best of luck, hope this helps.

you will likely have to have a test tube baby (IVF) so they an genetically screen the embryos before implantation. Or get a sperm donor.
