I found this in a letter to the editor of a newspaper:

I envision an old Iraqi man sitting at an outdoor bazaar with his 6-year-old granddaughter, who is coloring pictures for her mommy who is working as a civil rights attorney in downtown Baghdad. Her father travels throughout the country as a building engineer. The grandfather's weathered face will gently smile as she asks if he wants her to draw a picture for him. He nods yes as he reflects upon all the hustle and bustle around them.

It wasn't always this way. His thoughts drift back to a time of horrible oppression when he lodt uncles and cousins to the brutal regime of a ruler whose name never deserves mention again. As a convert to Christianity, he knows they smile from heaven at what has now become of their country. After a terrible, bloody transition and monumental human sacrifice where coalition troops, along with his own countrymen, finally brought lasting freedom, he and his granddaughter now rest in an Iraq that is a

.....a leader for peace and prosperity in the Middle East.

After a couple of taps on his arm to get his attention, his granddaughter hands him the picture she made for him, fully confident that he will like it. As he looks at a colored picture of an American flag, he will smile and thank her, but not without saying "God bless America."

Yes, a lot of people delude themselves into thinking that Iraq is suddenly going to be able to get past centuries of violence and ignore all the history of the region.

That outcome may happen -- but it will take decades..... and the concept that most people will convert to Christianity is so laughable that it makes the rest of the fairy tale seem almost reasonable in comparison.

Really no one believes this will ever happen. Some deluded people may think we can bring peace and democracy to Iraq, but Christianity? Never! If you are a believer in any religion, you have Faith in the principles of that religion. You would not convert. Also--suppose all Iraqi converted. They would be subject to an order of death from the rest of the Islamic world--hence the violence would not end. During the Spanish Inquisition, the Jews fled Spain for the new world. They pretended to convert and became the "convertos" of the present state of New Mexico, where they still exist today. They remained hidden, Shepardic Jews until the late 20th century. Truly religious people do not abandon their religion even in the face of death. That's exactly why the Christian faith has saints and martyrs.

I have had bronchitis for a couple of weeks. My cough medicine has a tendency to make the world appear to be a rosier place, but even after a dose of that, this scenario sounds like a SciFi flick, although, a lovely vision.

These people have a religion that consumes their life. They are not ever going to be Christians. It would bring death to them within their country. Perhaps they will have some form of democracy at some point if they can resolve centuries of disputes between their murderous sects. I'm not going to hold my breath until that happens.

Were they sitting outside a BBQ joint eating ribs too? Talk about a pipe dream. I want some of what that person has been smoking. Iraq is another Vietnam, endless years of conflict with only dead bodies and huge deficits to show for the efforts. The only difference, one is a desert the other was a jungle. Whoever wrote that is a blind fool following another blind fool.
