Hi
I live in england and the legal age to drink is 18 kids will drink when they like it being illegal just makes it a little bit more fun for them, you know what kids are like!! they think it makes them look bigger and better because they are breaking the law. i think parents should introduce their kids to alcohol as not something to be abused and being allowed to join in the adults with a meal or whatever a family party but within reason, that way when they are old enough to drink legally then they are not so much in a rush to get smashed because they are use to it already and wont abuse it as much but even adults abuse alcohol these days and its not a very good exapmle to set the kids.

NO - absolutely not! What's wrong with waiting just a little longer to make such an important decision - one that could be life changing - health changing - relationship changing. No, everyone does not become an alcoholic but do we want to take that chance earlier than we already are??
This is the argument used for legalizing 'illegal' drugs and it's not valid if for no other reason than there is actually proof that some of us are genetically proned to becoming alcoholics - i.e., it runs in the family. So to legalize alcohol for younger people would be a mistake. This is not the only reason but it's the one that comes immediately to mind.
I'm hoping that having to wait longer will give a person more time to think about all the hidden disadvantages to drinking instead of concentration on the 'immediate gradification' of a quick high that doesn't last, doesn't fix anything and can in may cases make things worst.

No I don;t think this would stop young alcoholism. I think the only thing that will help is if the parents around the country instill good moral and behavior and since of worth in our youth. I know in my case when I was growing up my parents always told me that I did not have to change who I was to fit in. I did not have to drink or do drugs to have a good time. If parents teach their children that there is more to having fun then getting wasted and puking all over themselves there will be less young adults with this serious problem. I feel that along your line of thinking if the government made street drugs legal then less people would use them too. People need to just take responsiblity for their actions.

No. There are too many other factors that contribute to underage drinking.
But i do think they should take it back down to 18. It's not right that you can die for your country but not be able have a beer or a scotch or something.
If they want to make both sides happy, they could pass a law that says you can order/buy alcohol if you show a valid military ID.

Worth a try, but I don't think it will work. I wish my school had had a former alcoholic or someone like that come and speak to us...I might have thought twice about experimenting and wasting so much time on this damaging substance. Education, not law, is the answer.

Our drinking age was from the age off 18 here in south-africa, now its on 16, yeah, 16 years, but that still didn,t change anything, the stores never even look at our ID document anyways.

The legal age to drink is 18 in the UK - I don't think it makes much difference on alcoholism... those prone to addiction still get addicted whatever their age.

I think your idea is good in theory, but kids these days are so unpredictable. (Here I am talking about kids and I'm 20, lmao). I think at first kids would drink more, but after the initial shock wears off, it won't be as big of a deal.... possibly.
Now, if they were to do that with marijuana, I think it would have that effect, since it wouldn't be all cool and dangerous anymore.

18 is way to young to drink and take responsibility for your actions! 21 is a fine legal age limit
