2 month shots

2007-08-12 02:22:16 · 16 answers · asked by Anonymous in Pregnancy & Parenting Newborn & Baby

sorry- did not provide details - my son will be 2 months and will be going for his shots. I have bought infant tylenol. However, when I check the dose for 0-3 months, it says to ask my doctor. How much tylenol should be given to an infant of 2 months and should it be an hour before the shots. A friend told me that I should give tylenol 4 hours before the shot and afterwards only if he develops temperature.
Thank you for your advise.

I never did this with my son, he cried for about 5 seconds after his shots and never got a fever after. Personally I don't like to medicate unless necessary. Just my two cents!

But just in case you decide to do it anyway, the dosage depends on his weight also:

Guidelines for dosing Infants' Concentrated Drops
(0-3 months) 6 - 11 lbs - ½ dropperful or (0.4mL)
(4-11 months) 12-17 lbs - 1 dropperful or (0.8mL)
(12-23 months) 18-23 lbs - 1½ dropperful (or 0.8 + 0.4mL)

This info was taken from the Children's Tylenol pamphlet given to me by by pediatrician. Our doctor tends to go more by the weight of the child than the age.

Bring the Tylenol with you to his visit. As soon as your baby is weighed, you can ask the nurse how much Tylenol to give him, based on his weight, and give it to him right then. 30 minutes before is okay, longer than that doesn't make a difference. Then you can give it every 4-6 hours (try to stretch it to the 6 hours if you can) afterwards if you want to. Use this rule of thumb: If he's happy and fine when it wears off, you don't need to give it just for the sake of giving it. If he's cranky and a little feverish when it wears off, give it again. If he's happy during the day, but cranky at bedtime, then give him a dose before bed.

Give your son the Tylenol while you're at the doctor's office- right before he gets the shots. They will give you a sheet which tells you the dosages based on weight. This is what I did, and it worked great. I also had to give the Tylenol twice more that day, but the next day my daughter was fine. Good luck!!

If you look on the dispenser inside the bottle there are 2 lines. You only want to give him up to the first line, which is the smaller dose. This is how much my doctor told me to give my son at his 2 month appointment. I would give it to him 30 minutes to 1 hour before his appointment. Tell your doctor that you did this and they will give you dosage instructions for after his shots. Good Luck and if you are still unsure, call your doctor and ask before his appointment!

the nurse always advised me to give it to them about 10 minutes before the shot.
It eases pain later on for the baby, and such trauma for the child often makes them sleep alot that day.
I know my daughter did. Its safe to use. The person above me made it seem like you should give your child tylenol everytime you want them to go to sleep and this is not intended.
It eases pain and discomfort in the child, and makes it easier on you.
My daughter recieved 3 shots on her 2 month appointment. The first one she did not cry, until she recieved the 2nd and 3rd.
She only cried for about 20 seconds and then after I gave her the pacifier or a bottle to distract her, she was fine.
If this is her first shot after her birth, she may be cranky the rest of the day still.
I remember my boyfriend and I were supposed to go out that day and actually do something together, as it was our only day off, but she was soo fussy that we decided to stay home instead.

At 2 months, I would wait and ask your doctor what the dose should be because it is all based on weight in infants. You can give the Tylenol afterwards.

i took my daughter on friday for her first shots and her ped told me that it is generally good to give an hour before but if that doesn't happen then an hour tops afterwards. so take your child but ask how much you should give since they go alot by weight for the dose.

I did it, like 20 to 30 minutes before. Just make sure you tell the administering nurse so that she doesn't give the baby a second dose before you know what she's doing. My PED said it was fine. It helps them fall asleep faster too. Good luck, it's never fun.

It is okay to give Tylenol to your child before their shots. In fact Dr.s will tell you to do so. It helps them to relax and I think it also helps with the pain.'
