Having married a person from Italy, I have learned that the Italians name their poison at particular times of the day. Cappuccino is the morning coffee, usually taken with a brioche or croissant type of pastry. Espresso is taken after a meal such as lunch or dinner, sometimes with a liqueur, such as sambuca, on the side or actually added to the coffee itself.
(In Italy, if you add some liquor to an espresso, it is called "an espresso with a correction.")
I like both, but if I had a cappuccino after a big meal, the Italians would make faces and threaten to call the carabinieri (the police).
But as foreigners we are forgiven protocol and can blunder. Enjoy one or both whenever you like.
