It doesn't matter what kind of fish you have

you're suppose to turn the light off at night for 12-14 hours and keep it on during the day for 10-12 hours
A timer is very helpful with that

Hope that helps
Good luck

I love fishing in the dark, Catfish are a more nocturnal fish and become very active after the sun goes down some bass where daylight catch and release fishing pressure is over abundant, learn to eat after dark and some pretty big ones come out at night. In the ocean (except for during red tides) the caught numbers of bass even go up compared to daytime totals. Halibut too bite at night maybe even more aggressively than during the day. I find cutting live bait near the tail fin will allow a scent to bring sensitive fish around quicker and when using artificial black (or at least very dark colors) are the most attractive colors after dark as well. Though sometimes using a light will attract the small and stupid bait fish, in the ocean this attraction will "light up" the bite so to speak as the larger ones come in to forage the well lit up baits. I suggest however when shoreline fishing to never put a light out at night as the light will actually spook the larger and smarter fish.

Hi Hiphop bunny,

Darkness is stress-reducing for the fish so it's ok to keep them dark at night. If you have a light in your aquarium you may like to leave on the light in the room when you switch off the aquarium light and then turn the light off in the room, that way the transition is more gradual for the fish. Likewise when you turn the light on in the aquarium you may like to switch the light on in the room first.
I don't use the aquarium lights and I covered the glass of a section of my aquarium to create a dark "cave" for the fish to hide in. They seem to really like this as they spend a lot of time in it.

It depends on the type of fish being sought. For catfish or bullhead it makes no difference, for bass, perch, crappie and many other species light makes a big difference. I've found that insects attracted by the light also attract baitfish which in turn will draw in the big ones. Of course you need to keep the bugs off you. I don't use bug spray as it leaves a smell which can be passed to your bait. I hope this has been helpful. Good luck!

I don't know if this is for all fish but my Tin Foil Barbs don't like the light. They won't even come up to eat when the light is on.

Fish need to have a day and night. Think about it, in the wild they have a day and night so it should be the same in your tank.
