The only good answer here is that noone knows. While I appreciate the article listed by Joe Nickell (more a leading debunker than paranormal investigator) that is certainly not the only explanation. I agree that one should look for normal explanations but as the article itself points out it can't explain every case without relying on the skeptical mantra of the unexplained cases were fraud or hallucinations.

I suggest reading John Keels book "The Mothman Prophecies" (your local library probably has a copy) then reading the opinions of other investigators (including the skeptics) and making up your own mind.

Ditto on the suggestions to read John Keel's The Mothman Prophecies (and his other books). These cryptozoological animals are often seen preceeding UFO activity. They may be manifestations related to the ufo phenomenon, rather than real animals.

hahaha, no, it was either a hoax, or mass hysteria. Notice not a single photo, not even fuzzy ones were taken of Mothman. That makes me lean towards mass hysteria. Kind of like the "war of the worlds" incident.
It ranks right up there with sightings of Elvis, and Marian apparitions.

No.

It looks like nothing more than a desperate and pathetic attempt at creating a tourism trade.
