Out in the country, away from any bright lights, and far away from the city lights. If you can see the glow of the city lights on the horizon, try going a little further. Try to be away from any large trees or forests, etc, as they will block your view of a good section of the sky. You could lay on the grass if you want, so you're not craning your neck to look up. Then wait at least 5 minutes to let your eyes adjust to the dark.

the best place would probably be in a place where there arent as many lights. we have the best viewing in north america because you and i live on the eastern coast which is said to be the best place to view it from. this will be my first time too : ]
