AF of L stands for American Federation of Labor, founded in 1886.

It is the same AFL as AFL-CIO -- American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations. They merged in 1955.

Seems to be something to do with Union membership. The letters stand for American Federation of Labor. The letters seem to be some sort of qualification as the various presidents of the unions have A F of L after their names. I can only assume that, at the time, ***** workers were barred from joining the Federation in the days of racial discrimination in America.
