can i also connect the modem to my laptop with a usb cable at the same time, so i can use either pc alternately. also can i leave both ethernet and usb cables connected to the modem permently

No, the modem you havve can be connected via usb or ethernet, not both at the same time, i know the modem you mean, my daughter has the same one. to connect both computers you will need to get a router

No you can not.
The TalkTalk modem is not a router, it only provides one connection.

To use more than one computer, you need to get yourself a Router, preferably a wireless one to use with your laptop. This will allow you to use wireless connections as well as over LAN cable. You can have a maximum of 253 computers on such a network, not that you may need to, but it's nice to know :-)
PS: What you need is an ADSL Wireless Firewall router which will protect you as well as increase your way of usage of your Internet.

If it is a modem you are using then I don't think so. If it is a router then yes.
