what's the purpose of a pre-season when it won't count for or against you during the rest of the season? is it just there for players to warm up for the regular season? or is it another reason? please share your answers.

Everything in sports is the bottom line. While the NFL will tell you it is for warmup, etc., it is actually for additional revenue (TV, tickets, sponsorships, etc.). The practice is just a by-product.

It is an opportunity to have "real game experience" against pro athletes to qualify to getting on a team. It is also another way for people to see a game without paying the outrageous price of a regular season ticket.

For players to get back into football after resting and to build up the season for the fans.

Primarily to get back into playing shape. I means during the off season, some guy don't work out, and tend to pig out every now and then.
