In China, we call it " Year Round". It can tell you the age of the tree. How do you say it in English.

Can I say it as " the grain"?

Thanks.

In England, we call it "growth rings", if you are looking at the cut end of the tree. If you talk about "the grain", that means the distinctive pattern that you see going lengthways (along) the tree, after it has been cut into a board or a plank. A close study of "growth rings" can tell you in which years the tree grew a lot, and in which years it grew only slowly.

You should not chop a tree as you have to save the planet from global warming
However every year the tree has grown prior to cutting down is marked by rings so if a tree has 50 rings it has grown for 50 years before some idiot cut it down to aid global warming
We're all doomed I tell you doomed.

As a tree grows, it not only grows taller, but thicker as well. So, each year the 'growth ring' is added to and, and when cut down, the age of the tree is counted by the number of rings that are visible.

Growth rings, also referred to as tree rings or annular rings, can be seen in a horizontal cross section cut through the trunk of a tree. Visible rings result from the change in growth speed through the seasons of the year, thus one ring usually marks the passage of one year in the life of the tree. The rings are more visible in temperate zones, where the seasons differ more markedly.

Age rings. One more ring adds each year as the spring and summer comes around.

the rings. if you count the rings of a tree trunk it will tell you it's age. or how old it is. I don't mean to sound like I am talking down to you. just not sure how well you understand. :)
