Just think of Television and the Telephone for starters. 2 of the worlds GREATEST inventions - by Scotsmen of course!
Also, the gorgeous scenery - you haven't lived until you've been to Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, Isle of Skye, Isle of Arran, St Andrews etc.....I think you get the picture eh?
And lastly, the people are VERY warm here, we don't wear kilts and run around saying "Och aye the noo Jimmy" while eating haggis you know!!!!!!
If you haven't already been, then please give it a try - you won't be disappointed.
Oh, but do remember to bring your umbrella, cos the weather sucks!!!! Lol.

I've just come back from my first ever holiday in Scotland and I have to say it's a beautiful, stunning country.
I'm sorry that Uber-Coolies thinks that all Scots hate the English, we found everyone to be extremely friendly and helpful, from the guide on the Edinburgh tour bus, to the barman in a remote highland pub.
I learned a lot about Scottish history and I can understand why the Scots dislike the English over historical events like Bannockburn, but that's so in the past, we shouldn't dwell on these things and use them as tools in the present day.
In answer to the question, I think you have to know something of the history of Scotland to understand how the country has been shaped the way it is.
I'm looking forward to my next visit there.

I'm english, living in Scotland and I love it here. The people are warm and friendly and have great humour. My partner is Scottish and he says that he takes a certain phrase literally (F the english!!). He's the best person I've had a relationship with as he's the kindest, considerate, most understanding man that I've ever met, and I love him and his country to bits.

It's going to be independent soon, probably.
Most of the country's economy comes from oil in the North sea (and that's why Westminster opposes independence - they'd lose a big chunk of revenue).
Oh, and deep fried mars bars!

If you ask me, Scotland is highly underrated. This is mainly due to ignorant americans, who only think of it as the place where the loch ness monster lives.
