It is called:The Coriolis Effect -

It governs the movement of weather patterns in each hemisphere of the Earth (north/south pole) - however it is actually very weak. In most cases the shape of the bath tub and the way you pull the plug out will have much more effect on the water - so what you're experiencing is a local effect.

Providing the water is not interfered with by an external force, i.e. stirred up, it will rotate clockwise in the northern hemisphere and anticlockwise in the southern. (See cyclones and anticyclones on weather maps). It is a result of the Earth turning and is a gyroscopic effect. Nothing to do with wind or gravity or the position of the moon or Auntie Mabel's mixer tap!

Urban myth.

In other words, it's not true. The direction of water flow depends on things like the shape of the bowl and any previous motion of the water, not on where in the world you are.

I guess Cyclonic in the N hemisphere and anti-cyclonic in the S hemisphere. As has been previously stated this is driven by the rotation of the Earth, the Coriolis effect. I believe that at the equator there is no rotation at all.
