It's not a rule, it's about saving a pitcher's arm. Throwing 100+ pitches takes a huge toll on your arm. They give starting pitchers 4-5 days between starts just to rest their arms. However, it happens from time to time that a starting pitcher will start one day and then come in as a reliever a day or two later - Barry Zito did it just last week. And when the Arizona Diamondbacks won the World Series, I believe Shilling or Johnson pitched on only 1-2 days rest.

No, there is no rule like that... it's up to the manager. They don't like to pitch pitchers on consecutive days because they don't want an injury from overuse... pitchers get paid a lot more nowadays and they're considered much more valuable than the days prior to multimillion dollar contracts.

Most pitchers pitch every 5th day. The starting pitcher might pitch well in one game but they require rest to keep them from getting injuries. Relief pitchers are the ones that are capable of pitching for two, three, or some times four days straight. Most relief pitchers only pitch 1 or 2 innings when they come in.

Throwing is so demanding that is puts a stress on there arm throwing all the Junk and as fast as they do, that they need the rest between starts, usually about 3 or 4 days. If they don't get that rest, they could seriosly injure there arm, and risk never pitching again.

No rules about such things, merely team policy or following "the book" (of which no copies physically exist).
