The follow-on. In a two innings match, if the side batting second scores substantially fewer runs than the side batting first, the side that batted first can force their opponents to bat again immediately. The side that enforced the follow-on risks not getting to bat again and thus the chance of winning. For a game of five or more days, the side batting first must be at least 200 runs ahead to enforce the follow-on; for a three- or four-day game, 150 runs; for a two-day game, 100 runs; for a one-day game, 75 runs. The length of the game is determined by the number of scheduled days play left when the game actually begins.

Follow On Cricket

In cricket, a follow-on is where the team that bats second is forced to take its second batting innings immediately after its first, because the team was not able to get close enough to the score achieved by the first team batting in the first innings. If the second team to bat scores substantially fewer runs than the first team, the first team have the option of enforcing the follow-on, instructing the second team to bat again immediately. In this case the sequence of batting innings will be first team, second team, second team and then, if needed, the first team again. This is in contrast to the normal progression of batting innings which is first team, second team, first team, second team.
n a match of five days or more, a side which bats first and leads by at least 200 runs has the option of requiring the other side to follow-on.
in a match of three or four days, 150 runs;
in a two-day match, 100;
in a one-day match with two innings per side, 75.

Follow on is given in test cricket only......

The follow on is imposed when team batting scores 200 runs less than from wat team batting 1st has made (eg Team A bats 1st n scores 500 runs and then Team B is bolwed out in less than 301 runs ie 300 runs) then Captian of Team A can inforce follow on Team B.
This rule is applicable for test matches for 5 Days only

For test matched of 4 Days
Follow rule is aaplicable for 150 runs

We calculate the runs required to avoid follow on in the following way
the amount of runs scored by team a in their first innings when they batted first suppose that is 600 so team b needs to amke 401 runs to avoid follow-on,this is an example.basically ti is the sirst side who batted its total score and the score of the team batting second should have a difference of less then 200 runs for the team batting second to avoid the follow-on.This is law no.13 in cricket.plezzzzzz vote as best answer if u feel sooooo!!!!!!!!

Asper Law 13of Cricket, follow-on in Test cricket can be enforced if the team batting second is all out with a deficit of 200 or more runs than the team which batted first.

it is done by deducting 199 runs from the score of the opponent in the first innings.

fro example, India scored 664 in the first innings of the third test match at oval. so now england was to take 445 i.e. 664-199 runs to avoid follow-on.
