Roswell: Yes, something actually crashed there. Coincidentally, the USAAF had Project Mogul was based at Alamogordo, NM. They were at the time highly classified, because they were using high altitude balloons to detect Soviet nuclear tests. Meanwhile, descriptions of the wreckage by the man who actually found it were consistent with such a high-altitude balloon and its payload. And, Mogul did lose one of its launches within that timeframe. And the flying saucer hysteria did make for a handy cover. Area 51: Ah yes. The stories of aliens were first popularized by one Bob Lazar who claimed all sorts of oddities were afoot when he claimed to have worked at Area 51. Of course, he also claimed to be a physicist, but as of yet, there is no evidence that he actually attained any of the education that he had claimed to, not even classmates who remember him. NASA video tapes: Claims that these can ONLY be aliens handily fit the template of an argument from ignorance. The Flake Equation: generally, even if there has been no contact, using fairly conservative values, the internet should be full of accounts of extraterrestrial visitation.
