Perry hit six home runs. His first, however, occured on 20-July-1969, the day Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the Moon.

Perry was an exceptionally poor hitter, even as pitchers go. Legend has it that someone, possibly his former manager Alvin Dark, once claimed that there would be a man on the moon before Perry ever went yard. This has proven difficult to substantiate, as Snopes (link below) has tried.

Perry's shot came at approximately the time Eagle touched down, but hours before Armstrong took his giant leap.

True or not, it really is a wonderful story.

Actually, it was freakier than that! Robert Kennedy was the one who said that man would land on the moon before Perry hit a home run. He said it at a game he was attending and the conversation revolved around John F. and all. It was like a twilight zone event.

And it landed on the moon. Neil Armstrong brought it back and had Perry sign it. Then Gaylord had Neil sign it. The NASA Space Museum and Baseball's Hall of Fame & Museum take turns displaying it.
