A republic country means that it has it's own laws, etc right? Has it's own Monarchy? Is this right?

Republic means that is does not have a monarchy.
It also mostly means that it it an independent state with its own laws, but that is not obvious from the word republic alone.

The Soviet union used to be a state comprised of many republics.
