I heard that Switzerland was not part of the european union? Is this right? what other countries are not part of it?
Does this mean that because I have an english passport I am not eligible to work in the countries not part of the EU?

Many countries allow people from other countries to work there even when they are not part of the EU.
So if you want to work in a non EU country, go to the embassy website and see what the rules are.

EU countries, this site has a list of all countries you can work because you have an UK passport:
http://www.workpermit.com/european_union/european_union.htm
And for which (new member states) there might be restrictions.

And this site may also have useful info for you:
