No, especially if you haven't heard this noise before. Often, the noise generated is because the reading head is coming into contact with the disk, which means shortly that it will begin to damage the surface.
Start backing up your important files immediately. (External hard drives are dropping in price, you can get a basic USB External Hard Drive for under $100). You can drag and drop, or you can get a program like Norton Ghost. I have included a link from another fourum that lists various data back up programs.

Good luck!

Depends on what kind of noise. On start up there is a click and a few sliding noises as the drive initializes. On ocassion there will be a thunk as the unit does a head reset for one reason or other. If it is a constant buzz sound I would be concerned the bushings are going bad and get the data backed up as soon as possible. If a slight whir, that is the motor running, disk spinning and heads flying on the disk. Nothing to worry about.

Generally, you may hear (minor) some noise from the hard drive as the disk is spinning and accessing or storing data. I would only be concerned if the noise was loud, or grinding, or screechy. Anything of this sort could mean that the hard drive is about to fail (die).

Hi, if it is acceptable then no issues, but if it is very noisy then you have to be careful as the hard disk may get physically damage and you will lost your data, take full backup of your system to external HD or DVDs so that you'll be on safe side and try to install some softwares that check the physical status of the hard disk to know if it is reliable or need to be replaced.

If you have been hearing that noise recently, then it's time for you to backup your data because the HDD's lifetime might be coming to an end.

Otherwise, if the HDD is old, say 4 or 5 years old, that should be normal because that's how HDDs used to sound.

New HDDs should have almost no sound at all. So if you bought yours recently and it had that noise, ask for a replacement.

yes it is ok only problem when side by side your operating system shut downs/restarts or slows down . hard disk of segate does make more noise . Nothing to fear . Just run scan disk whole disk if you have doubts on hard disk. :) Open command prompt type chkdsk C: and check for any bad sectors after it completes scanning and do same action on all partition if you have one i.e. D:\ e:\ .

Below is a link from Iomega, regarding sounds from hard drives. And gives some info on what to do.

Another good tip, is to defrag your HD, to help put less strain on the mechanics of the drive, this step may help extend the life of the drive and also make apps, and progs. run faster.

if the computer and drive is still under warranty, I'd recommend having it replaced. Likely you won't get any fuss from the supplier and may get a replacement free of charge.

Good luck
