I'm not sure a wineglass would work so well, you would be relying on sound vibrations to move through the stem of the wine glass. I always used juice glasses, as a kid. I would place the glass against the wall and put my ear to the bottom of the glass with pretty good results.

The wineglass helps match a relatively small vibration of the solid structure to a relatively larger vibration of air that your ear senses. Hold the stem against the wall and enclose the top of the glass around your ear.

Hold the rim of the glass to the wall making sure there is 100% contact, now place an ear on the bottom ot the glass, the solid glass will provide a better conducductor for sound waves than the air next to the wall does.
