I am a 23 year old recent college grad with no children. Although I would like to have them someday everytime I hold my friend's nephew he always cries. This discourages me from wanting to have kids because I feel if this baby hates me and I can't stop him from crying, I am going to be a bad mother. Is it normal for me to feel this way???

The baby cries because you are not his mother and are unfamiliar to him. Lots of babies cry if someone they have not known since birth takes them. Don't worry about it, your baby will want you to hold it.

yes it is normal... how often do you see your friends nephew? sometimes if you are no familiar to the child they will cry. Also if mum is not in the room while you are holding him he may know. also he may be crying because he is hungrry has wind or is tired of being held babies are really good at being able to tell if a person is slightly stressed or worried so try to be a bit relaxed when you hold him...so it is not you who is making him cry...one day when you have your degree and find some really cute guy you will have children and probably make a great mum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This baby isn't YOUR baby- baby's normally cry when someone other than a parent holds them. Don't be discouraged your baby will bond with you. No child is born with instructions and contrary to popular beliefs we aren't as instinctual about parenting as we'd like to think. Don't worry, enjoy your nephew, he doesn't hate you- he's just a little baby new to the world, and uncertain about people around him who aren't his parents!
You can't judge your parenting skills based on a child crying- babies are notorious for crying and it's acctually good for them..so don't worry when he crys...alot of parents haven't figured out how tosooth thier baby's..and they don't come with manuals. Stop being so hard on yourself..

Oh yes, definitely normal. You'll find though that when you are a parent, you will be the one who can calm your child when no one else can. It's an amazing thing to become a mother and only those who are themselves can truly relate to the incredible, amazing experience it is. 23 is still young to think about becoming a mother, and I fully recommend waiting until at least your late 20's to do so.

He isn't your child, and probably wants his mother, just like how your children will want YOU one day over anyone else in the world.

don't let this bother you at all. honestly it doesn't mean anything of the sort. you will be a great mother. no worries. maybe next time your hold him have a toy or a snack he likes, maybe this will help.

don't take it personally. it has NOTHING to do with you. let him get to know you. calm him down, hold him close, sing/talk to him in a soothing voice. if you show him you're gentle & safe, he'll probably think twice about crying.

uhm... older babies .. say above 6 mo, they are scared of strangers, i know u r not a stranger, but maybe he/she is not seeing u very often...

to approach to a baby, don't rush into it... u have to be slowly, if her/his mom is nearby ... it will easier for u to apporach, cos he/she feels safe

well, it is gonna different when u have ur own... babies know their moms scent.. and even ur baby will looking for u most times :p then u even can't get off of him :p
