Please, please, please think hard before you try this. I've been off the Depo Provera since 2000 and my hair still hasn't grown all the way back. I lost about a 1/4 inch along most of my front hair line. The rest of my hair came back and is thick and strong, but the hairline is awful compared to what it was. In addition to the severe hair loss, I gained over 40 pounds, 20 while taking Depo and 20 after coming off. I never had a migraine before Depo and during use and for the first year after being off it, I had severe migraines at least once a week. My skin itched like I wanted to rip it off and I was hot all the time. I would get extreme vertigo with no warning. Just try staggering at work or while in the pharmacy and not look like you had a drinking problem! A little over a year after coming off the Depo Provera, I developed two serious blood clots one after the other. The cause was never completely determined because I had not been on birth control of any kind for over a year and my blood tests were normal. I finally had a rib removed and the clots stopped, but I will contend to this day the Depo had at least a little something to do with it. About the same time as the blood clots, I started having severe cramping and a year into it, my doctor found pretty severe endometriosis. With the resulting depression and the lack of sex from Depo you may not have to worry about getting pregnant because you won't want to have sex anyway. I know some people do just fine with this birth control, but it's not worth the chance. It takes upwards of 6 to 8 months for the effects to wear off and sometimes longer. My hair has never grown completely back along the hairline and I am having a hair transplant at a tune of $5,000.00 to fix it. I am only 35! I can't wait until Depo is researched more deeply and to someday find out what else this drug did to screw up my system. They ought to be ASHAMED! I got the (copper) IUD (since I can't use hormones anymore due to future clotting risks). My insurance paid for it. You still get your period, but it's worth it. Sorry to have to say this, but our bodies are made to have periods unless we are pregnant. If you force your body into an unnatural state, it WILL fight back!

I have noticed that the depo shot does increase your weight. I am a medical assistant for a gyn and weigh my Pt's every time they come for their injection. I have noticed an increase of body weight by at least 5 pounds every month. You have to get your blood pressure checked regularly because any form of birth control can increase it. Try talking to your doctor, there are other, less invasive birth controls out there. Some that will only allow 4 periods a year. Sometimes the depo will help stop the bleeding, sometimes, it doesn't do much good at all. At your age, I would suggest talking to the doctor to decide which is the best for you.

Those are a couple of side effects of the depo shot, but not every woman who uses it sees side effects, it's different for everyone. I used the shot for 6 years, I loved not having my period. Then I moved to a big city and got a new doctor who refused to prescribe it to me because of a new study that showed an increase in bone loss in women who used the depo shot. The best thing to do would be to talk to your doctor about the pros and cons about the shot. They would be able to tell if it's good for you, or if there's any other types of birthcontrol that could stop your period. I think there's something you can use that would give you a period four times a year or something like that.

NOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo please don't get it!!!

Google "depo provera lawsuit" and look at the reviews on http://www.rateitall.com/t-330-birth-control-methods.aspx

PLEASE rethink getting this drug!

I was on it for four years and I'm so glad I'm OFF of it. I had weight gain, loss of libido, headaches, mood swing from hell, it was horrible. I'm on Kariva (pill) now and sooo much happier. I'm panicking because I hope I can conceive since many women have had to go to a fertility specialist because of the shot!

The ONLY positives about this shot are the fact you may not ever get your period and that it is once every twelve weeks. There are way way way too many negatives for me to recommend this drug to anyone, I'm appalled its still being administered.

Having periods is a natural part of a woman's body! You could try Seasonale or Lybrel (both pills) but I beg you don't get this shot.

I been using depo 2 times and had bad side effects. Think well before having shots. Ask doc if theres another contraceptives to recommend than this.

I've heard WAY more bad things about it than good.... And i know a few people who have actually gotten pregnant on it..

My advice: don't do it.
