The random movement of microscopic particles suspended in a liquid or gas, caused by collisions with molecules of the surrounding medium.


I saw a video illustrating this a number of years ago. In it there was a glass bowl of water that had been sitting still for awhile. I tiny drop of food coloring was introduced as carefully as possible. It sat there and after some time it had started to mix with the water a little bit. It was until about a full 24 hours later had the food coloring completely mixed with the water in the bowl.
