I know in the pros, the numbers identify certain positions, but does it matter in the high school level?

There are two basic requirements for 11 man football under NFHS (high school) and NCAA (college, used in Mass. and Texas) rules:
1) There have to be five offensive linemen numbered 50-79. However, for a scrimmage kick (i.e. punt and field goals) this requirement does not apply

2) Eligible receivers have to have numbers 1-49 or 80-99.

These rules do not apply to 6, 7, 8, or 9 man football.

Yes, Jersey number - even down to pee wee football - identify positions on Offense.

So yes, it matters in High School

No, becuase often high school football players play on both sides of the ball. The onyl thing they expect is for lineman to wear high numers, and leave the low numbers for skill position players.

ya, my coach said lineman and linebackers get numbers between 50-79, everyone else gets 1-20 and 80-99.
