According to Steven Spielberg's website.
At Arcadia High School in Phoenix, Arizona in 1963, the then 16-year-old Spielberg wrote and directed his first independent movie, a 140-minute science fiction adventure called Firelight (which would later inspire Close Encounters). The movie, with a budget of USD$400, was shown in his local movie theater and generated a profit of $100. A writer for the local Phoenix press wrote that he could expect great things to come.

He did the "Duel", which is the movie with the truck, in 1971. "Duel" was a made for TV movie, which was like his third TV movie.

His first major release was "The Sugarland Express" in 1974.

He would have been 13 years old in 1959.

According to www.imdb.com the earliest directing he did was something called The Last Gun in 1959. Duel was about the semi and it was in 1971.

Edit- Just a note to the next poster. Spielberg doesn't have an official site that he maintains. The only sites are fan sites. www.imdb.com is the most credible of any of them and they say his first movie was The Last Gun. He directed and acted in it. Just because he was 13 doesn't mean he didn't make movies.
