Who are you guys to decide what is "stupid" I grew up with a very different name and I loved it and I have and will give my kids uncommon names. Why should everyone be mike, joe, sarah, beth's how boring is that, not to mention that everybody in the class will have the same names. It takes someone with imagination to come up with a beautiful name. Anyone can just copy the same old plain names that everyone has. Also, why don't all of you study you're history EVERY name was once considered different or stupid. I think it's also ignorant to say that a uncommon name is stupid because every person in this world does not like the same names otherwise everyone would be named the same exact names!!!

Depends what you consider stupid... I think naming your child Emily or Jake or Matthew is stupid. I have a name list ready, and not one of the names is on the top 1000 list on the Social Security website. I don't like weird spellings or made up names, but I can appreciate different.... Maybe people don't want their kid being one of 15 in his/her class in school.

Also - I'm really sick of hearing people say to think about your child being teased in school... Kids are kids - no matter what your name is they will find something to tease about. I have a different name, and I didn't get teased, and I love my name. I didn't like it when I was little because I never had anything with my name on it, like all those stupid things like license plates and necklaces and pencils that are sold in stores. When I got older and no one had the same name as me, I was thrilled. The popular names of my generation are Jennifer, Danielle and Stephany. Thank god my mother had some imagination...... To this day I'm the only 33 year old I know named Carson.

I think there are two different categoesi of names -- ones that are unique but at least oyu can pronounce them (such as Apple) and then the others that the parents try to be so unique that it makes no sense. There was one name on her a few days ago -- something like Nijialiyah. What is that? Who can say it? Who can spell it?

There are certain ridiculous names and combinations of names that just set your child up to be pre-judged before they even get a chance. If your daughter fills out a job application and her name is Nijialiyah --- she will be prejudged as some ghetto chick even if that is not the case. Im sorry - I dont make the rules - just calling it like I see it. Give your child a name that is unique but a name that they can fit into society with. you can be unique and sensible.

It depends what you think is stupid. The name mignon sounds odd to me, it reminds me of meat.. but is common where I live. Its a french name meaning sweet and delicate, but I'm not used to hearing it and although I might think it sounds "stupid" I am not from that culture, so it is my lack of understanding that colors that opinion. I have enough presence of mind to keep my mouth shut though, because I realize that just because a name sounds different to me, doesn't invalidate it or make it "stupid." As far as place name and object names, people have been naming children from places and things, even professions, for centuries. Almost all names today are derived from such origins. And plenty of names are "made up" Look at the name wendy, that was an invented name, or Hunter, these could be considered just as "stupid."
AND for the last time...Mercedes was a name before it was a car...again a vast lack of understanding causes people to think this is a goofy name. silly rabits.

Names have evolved over time and this is the time we live in. While some of us think that some names are somewhat 'stupid' or incomprehendable it is one's choice. I have a daughter named Bailey and I copped some flack over that, but it is what we like. We both come from large famlies and decided we were not going to name after family. I have nephews and nieces whose names include Darrion, Christian, Xander, Javier, Soraya, Tallara, Tori and Aaron, the kids who are at school etc don't get teased with these names however we have a friend who's kids names are Lillian Henrietta, Molly Gertrude and Thomas Daniel (i kid you not about these names, named after family) and these poor kids get teased a lot. These names are classed as traditional.

Maybe it's good to be a little less traditional, how many peter, davids, michaels, johns, marys, annes etc could we have in one class (eg). I know I for one have what is considered a tradtional name, and i don't particularly like my name.

I think maybe we need to be a little less judgemental and accept that this is what people have named/ or want to name their kids.

They are obviously not stupid to the parents, just to some other people. It's not possible for everyone to like the name you have chosen. I do agree though that some people who call their kids things like Mercedes or Superman are very cruel, it must be obvious to them that the child will be teased later on in life!! I think some parents use their kids to get attention themselves, although these are a very small minority.

I have a long name not a made up one but I personally think its that parents want these kid names that will fit a child not a name that a grown up can live with too and these names where there kids will stand out hey its takes different people to make a world(and names)

My name fits a little girl and a little girl only but all parents dont see every aspect of it but like I said my name isnt made up its just long and cute(as in little girl cute) and since Im grown its better than I thought it would be to have a little girls name but my 15 year old sister named me(shes fifteen years older than me not 15 years old now) and of course at her age she was gonna pick something cute

what a boring world it would be if we were all called names like sarah, matthew, jane, mark - not that those names are bad but there are too many people called that. my son has an irish name that was not used much here until he was a year old and everyone called their kids the same name. but my daughter has a spannish name but it suits her as she has an olive tint to her and dark hair and eyes.she was named after an actress/model and iv'e come across no one else with the same name apart from spannish adults mainly.this is the whole point i think that not everyone wants to be the same.i named my children in the hope that they were more of an individual,if i was to have another child i would like the name peyton for a boy,it's not made up it's just not used here as it's american.if i was to have a girl i would like a more traditonal name but still one thats not used so much today like elizabeth, natalie or again i'd go for a foreign name.my children have an uncle called Zamon and an uncle called Lian and an uncle called Jadon,(Jadon is actually an american name but it's spelt 'Jayden'),but many people may think they are silly names. i think as long as the parents are happy it's fine we can just laugh to ourselves and keep the idea it's ridiculous to ourselves. find something else to worry about what parents do to their kids like feeding them rubbish and letting a child who is 2 yrs old be at the weight of 66 Ibs. i too have a traditional name and dont like it,but my parents did the same thing many do today which is name after a person they like or song film etc. if the child likes their name it's fine if not most of them get their friends to nickname them. if your child is called something like 'superman' or 'rocket science' or 'cinderella' then there may be ridiculing for the child.
